Some research (Selfe & Hawisher, 2004) suggests that early learning experiences play a role in shaping someone’s personal understandings about technology. When you were growing up, when did you start using a computer regularly? What do you remember about your first use of computers? What were/are the technological literacies of your parents, grandparents, and siblings?
I started using computers when I was around the age of 9. I mostly used it for educational purposes but I also started playing games and learned how to type. My family has a somewhat good understanding of computers. My sister is one of the most proficent in my family at using computers and software since she is studying medicine and is around computers all the time.
ReplyDeleteI started using a computer regularly when I was probably in the third or fourth grade playing games on CD's and on the internet. I remember that I could not be on the internet if someone wanted to use the phone, which is amusing in this day and time. My siblings and parents are strong in their use of computers;however, my poor grandparents often need help with certain aspects. Growing up in this century, it is going to become a lot easier for children to learn the technology of computers.
ReplyDeleteI remember using a computer some in elementary school. I also remember when we first got a computer in our home, I was probably about 7 or 8 years old when we got it. My mom worked for Louisiana Tech at the time(and still does), but back then we used the internet that La. Tech provided through the phone line as dial-up to their employees. My mom works in CIT on campus as a Moodle coordinator so she is pretty tech-savvy, as is my dad. My dad is the IT coordinator where he works as well and knows a fair amount of things about computers and just technology in general. My grandparents don't know a whole lot about computers, or cell phones, or any technology really other than the TV remote and a telephone. I don't have any siblings, but if I did I'm sure we would probably play video games together and they would probably be about as technologically advanced as most of our generation is.
ReplyDeleteI STARTED USING COMPUTERS ON A REGULARLY BASIS WHEN I WAS IN HIGHSCHOOL FOR PAPERS AND RESEARCH. I CAN'T REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME I USED A COMPUTER. I JUST REMEMBER GROWING UP AND USING THEM. MY SISTER IS REALLY GOOD AT TECHNOLOGY LIKE MODERN TWIST TO THE COMPUTER AND MY MOM IS REALLY GOOD AT THE OLD SCHOOL WORD AND EXCEL.
ReplyDeleteI started using a computer when I entered elementary school. Being in Gateway, I often had more access to computers than most kids at school did. I remember having one in my room that I could only play one game on and type things in Word, which helped my typing skills. My parents can both use a computer very well, as can all of my siblings, but only one of my gradparents lived long enough to be able to use a computer, though she still never did.
ReplyDeleteI was in fifth grade when I made a MySpace account before facebook became so popular, and that is when I started using computers regularly. I remember I always had to change the song that was on my Profile and always went and posted on my friends profile. Now I always get on facebook and check my Latech email and moodle. My parents even have a facebook and my mom actually completed her Masters Degree online. My dad always gets on youtube to watch videos about airplanes and other funny videos that he always makes me and my sister watch with him. My little sister who is 8 knows how to use an IPhone and IPad probably better than my parents do.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was growing up, I did not start using a computer regularly until I reached junior high school. I was about twelve years old at the time. That was the time that MySpace was extremely popular. My first use of computers consisted of playing games. I would go on the paint software that is usually preinstalled in most PCs. I could be on there for hours! My parents and grandparents do not have much intelligence of computers. My mom is constantly asking me questions when she is on the computer. My siblings are very computer literate though. They have no problems using computers. It is probably because of the generation that we grew up in.
ReplyDeleteI didn't start using a computer regularly until middle school. I did use the compute some in elementary but it was for games and the math work that was sent home or the St. Jude game for math wizard that came out. My family has never been around technology, my dad just now got a facebook and a smart phone. My grandparents don't know how to text or how to use the media sites. My mom has always been very concerned about facebook or myspace. She feels like some people dont need to know who you are cause the world today is crazy and scary. But my mom uses facebook a lot today and I use facebook to keep up with stuff and communicate with people.
ReplyDeleteI did not start using a computer regularly until I was about 11 years old. I used them occasionally for computer games, but never really explored them until middle school. When I first used them, I was surprised at the vast amount of information that was on the internet. Being able to talk to people instantly over the computer really showed me how communication and technology had been progressing. I don’t have any siblings or grandparents, but I have noticed that older people seem to have trouble with the ever changing and improving technologies. My parents are always asking for my help when it comes to computers/iPods/kindles.
ReplyDeleteI believe i started using a computer regularly around when i was eleven years old. I remember we got a old computer that had windows 98. It's ammusing to see technology that is so oudated these days because at the time we believed it to be extraordinary. I remember always playing the pinball game that came with the computer. Along with using the internet with a dial-up connection. It was so slow compared to now. My parents and siblings along with my grandparents are decently up to date with technology. We all use smart phones, have laptops, and up to date desktops. My Grandpa was the Chief engineer at channel 6 news in Shreveport for years. He knows way more about technology and computers than the rest of my family.
ReplyDeleteMy home had a family computer since I was seven or eight. My first memories with computers were simple paint, solitaire, and checkers. I was not able to go on the internet till an older age or my father was by my side. Which I understand since the internet can be dangerous if not careful. All of my family is capable of using computers and there software with no problem. My younger siblings are very young so they are yet to go on internet on there own without supervision yet.
ReplyDeleteI first started using computers when I was in middle school to play games. We soon started using them for class activities and homework. My parents both use computers for work and my sister, also. However, my grandparents do not use computers that much.
ReplyDeleteI first started using computers when I was around 10 years old, although I could not use it too much. I became more familiar with the computer when I was about 11 to 12 years old for 5th and 6th grade assignments. I remember being allowed to play Barbie as Sleeping Beauty and paint on the computer. My parents had computers at their office, which was where I was first introduced to one, and my grandparents allowed me to play on theirs since it had internet.
ReplyDeleteWhen growing up I started using a computer regularly in about the 5th grade. My first use of computers was enjoyable.I was teaching my grandmother how to work her e-mail she was having a harder time than I was. I would say that my grandmother is always having problems with internet and working her e-mails. My mother has a computer in her bedroom so what ever she has problems with so she either looks it up on google or calls me. My sister is about the same as me.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was growing up I never used a computer. My mom worked from home so she had a computer in her office but I never had a want to go use it. Also, my parents never stressed that there was an importance to getting comfortable with it. When I did start using computers, at school, I didn’t really care for the whole experience. My mom is very good at some particular programs for her job but no one in my family is particularly interested in technology.
ReplyDeleteMy families first computer was purchased when I was in about second grade. When I regularly started using a computer was in middle school. My first distinct memory of computers was the aol voice saying, "You've got mail!" I remember having to teach my grandma how to use a computer and writing her step by step directions. At first my parents and grandparents were slower to learn how to use a computer than my siblings and I, now they aren't too far behind.
ReplyDeleteI was introduced to computers when I was in kidnergarten, but I didn't get one in my house until I was in the third grade. My siblings and I were always fighting over who got to use it. My brothers are both older than me, so they know more about technology than I do, which is a considerable amount. My little sister is eleven, and she has never lived a day without a computer, an ipod, or a smartphone, so she'll end up smarter than the rest of us. My parents know enough about technology, and they don't plan on expanding their knowledge. My grandparents just recently became apart of the iphone world. My grandmother just recently bought herself an ipad and an iphone 5. She may not know how to use either of them, but getting them is a start.
ReplyDeleteI first starting using computers a lot when I was in about 4th grade. We had a lot of assignments in my English class that had to be typed up before we turned them in. When I first started using Word to do these assignments I wasn’t really sure how to use all the tools on there, but the more I practiced and was taught I started to grasp the concept a little more. My Dad, Brother and Sister are all pretty good with technology. My Mom is starting to catch on a little more at a time. And I would say my grandparents have little to no technological literacy.
ReplyDeleteWhile growing up, I used a computer regularly once I got into higher education. High school really was the beginning of using a computer for mostly everything. I remember the first time using a computer; I was able to play a cd game. It didn’t take me long to figure out the computer after that. My grandparents had a rough time with technology and rather the old fashion way.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree that early learning experiences can play a role in shaping someone’s personal understandings about technology. I believe I started using computers when I was eight or nine. Our generation knows a lot about technology , but not near as much as the generations after us because the generations after us have been using technology starting at a younger age. On the other hand generations before us doesn’t know nearly as much about technology because they didn’t start using it until later on in life.
ReplyDeleteI started using a computer when I was pretty young. I was probably 4 or 5 years old. I used to play interactive learning and reading games on the computer. As I got older, I used it more and more for school assignments and personal use like facebook and twitter. My parents are pretty technologically literate and so is my older brother. My Grandparents have a harder time remembering what certain things do on a computer, but they are trying. My grandmother has a facebook because I made her get one. She has actually enjoyed it and likes seeing old friends on it.
ReplyDeleteI first started using a computer regularly when I was in middle school. I played games in elementary school but not to the point of using it regularly. It was mainly required for certain school topics, but I also used it for social networking. I rememember the internet being slower. My dad is the one that taught me the basics but I figured the rest out on my own. Both of my parents are good with computers but for some reason my sister is not the best at using them.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first became familiar with a computer, I was enrolled in a computer literacy class in elementary school. The class was thirty minutes long and the teacher taught us how to type. First, we were taught to type by looking at the keyboard then once we could type fairly quickly, the teacher taught us to type with a cover over the monitor with our eyes blindfolded. Looking back on this experience it has really been beneficial to me as a college student as I use my computer on occasions to record power point notes or notes on the board. Being able to type without looking at the keyboard or the screen I can focus on the material, giving me more time to focus on the lecture. My brother was taught the same instruction on how to type making him an excellent student as well. Throughout my life I have also helped several members of my family learn to type because they were never taught in school or have never had the gumption to learn.
ReplyDeleteI began using a computer regularly around my seventh grade year. As a first grader, I remember my first use of computers being an exciting experience, rather than the use of a pencil and piece of paper. My mother is very literate with computers and uses one each day at her job. My father on the other hand does not own a computer or even have an email account. None of my grandparents have a computer or know how to use one and I do not have any siblings.
ReplyDeleteI was first introduced to computers in the fourth grade. My elementary had a computer lab where we were taught typing and basic functions of a computer.I had one at home also which I allowed to play games for two hours a day. My dad is very good with computer programming so I also become techno savvy from observing him. My mom only knows because things such as surfing the web or sending a simple email. None of my grandparent ever owned or used a computer. My siblings also know how to proficiently use a computer.
ReplyDeleteMy first encounter with computers was probably around the 3rd or 4th grade. I used the computer to play games but nothing more than that. I didn't begin using them for anything other than that until I began junior high. At that point I used the computer for writing papers. My 8th grade year in keyboarding was when I was really able to grasp everything the computer had to offer. My mama and daddy know how to do pretty basic things on the computer. My dad had his own business so it was pretty essential that they both knew how to operate a computer. My siblings know how to use a computer very efficiently.
